Most of them are in danger of disappearance, under the encroaching influence of the dominant Malay. This grammar of Semelai, by Nicole Kruspe, is the first comprehensive grammar of an Aslian language. The Semelai reside in the region between Segamat and the Pahang River. The Semelai are classified as so-called "Proto-Malays", one of three categories into which the Orang Asli are officially divided. Actually the Semelai language is an Austroasiatic language, while the other groups classified as "Proto-Malay" speak Austronesian languages. This grammar of Semelai, a revised version of the author s Ph.D. thesis (University of Melbourne, 1999), is the first-ever full-length description of an Aslian language, and Semelai itself has previously been known only through word lists collected fifty to one hundred years ago. A tripartite language is a language that treats the agent of a transitive verb, the patient of a transitive verb, and the single argument of an intransitive verb each in different ways. This contrasts with nominative accusative and ergative absolutive languages. A Grammar of Semelai Split ergativity is a term used by comparative linguists to refer to languages where some constructions use ergative syntax and morphology, but other constructions show another pattern, usually nominative-accusative. The conditions in which ergative constructions are used varies from language to language. About this Book.
